Interview

Haircut
30/04/2003

Please give a brief history of the band, including current line up.

First we would like to thank you Rebecca for the interview and your interest in our French oi! band.
We are Haircut, we come from the North West suburbs of Paris and we've started to play at the beginning of 2001.

Our definitive line up is:
Kroub-singer (28 years old)- is a technician of maintenance.
Elodie-bassist (29)- is working in the French railways.
Nico Haircut-guitarist (27)- is working in computer technical aid.
Nico BDS-drummer (28)- is an unemployed person since a few weeks

Discography.

We have a vinyl single "Chronique d'un Militaire" and a MCD "le Goût des Armes" on our own label (Bords de Seine Records). Dim Records from Germany has just produced our first full album called "Fils d'Ouvrier" (LP/CD).

Has any band member played in other bands, if so what? And if you could play in any band, what would it be?

Yes, we all played with punk bands in the past but there were only rehearsal-bands with no recording songs, except Nico BDS who played with WARBOOTS (RIP) and OEIL POUR OEIL (still play with a new drummer).

If you were writing a review about Haircut, how would you describe the band?

It's very difficult to answer!! We can tell you that we play mid-tempo Oi! with Fench lyrics, our sound is close to the old French oi! glories like Skinkorps, Evil Skins, L'Infanterie Sauvage or Brutal Combat, and that our favorite current bands are Skinflicks, Perkele, Evil Conduct and Ultimo Asalto.

Do you think French oi has a different sound (other than the obvious difference in language to British oi) and what influences the lyrics?

Yes, we do. There are a few reasons in our opinion: the life of most French bands is often very short, then we aren't great musicians, in addition of that studios aren't good or are too expensive!
As regards with our lyrics, we would say they're ordinary skinhead songs (serious subjects or not, it depends on our mood !).

What is the best gig Haircut have ever done and who else was on the line-up?

Our two gigs at the Kastelein in Belgium were very fun (with Beerzone first and next with Ultimo Asalto), like the 2 "Oi! en France" Festivals (with Retaliator and next with On File). But certainly our best memories and our best gig (great sound) were in Brittany with our friends The Veros and Lourds 5.

What is the favourite song (and what band is it by) of each member of the band?

Kroub : Perkele : A song for you
Elodie : 4 Skins : 1984
Nico Haircut : L'Infanterie Sauvage : Je pense à la Russie
Nico BDS : Anti Squad (from Indonesia) : Skinhead warrior

What is the Punk/Oi scene like in your area?

We have to tell you that the French skinhead scene is sadly almost dead!!
The current Oi! Paris bands are Haircut, Oeil Pour Oeil, Conflit 75 and Traquenard, that's all!

Plans, gigs and releases planned for 2003.

We are going to record 7 new songs for compilations and split singles (with Stomper 98 and Counterattack).
We have a few of gigs planned from May 2003 to next September (East of France, Germany, Italy, Spain...).

Any final comments?

We are a non-political band but we care about social and politics, we just think that it's personal and both politics and the skinhead way of life are getting on badly together!
Thanks and cheers to all skins & punks from the UK!

We have a few stuff for sell (prices postpaid):
-chronique d'un militaire EP (3 tracks) 5
-le gout des armes CD (7 tracks including the EP) 10
-fils d'ouvrier LP or CD (11 new tracks) 14
-TShirt (Medium, Large) (yellow logo on black T-S.) 14
