Punk Rock Blues drops the blues for May and focuses on pure
and unadulterated punk rock with the Newtown Neurotics, Blood Safari and Chinese Lungs on
Saturday 6th May at The Spitz. In this year of sentimental and commercialised
nostalgia for punk rock, 1976 and all that, we shine the
spotlight on the real punk heartland of England -London’s satellite
towns and the bands they produced -in this case Harlow and The Newtown Neurotics.
The Neurotics were formed by Steve Drewett in 1979 in direct response to
witnessing the visceral roar of The Clash and The Ramones. Highly politicised
from the get go with songs such as “Hypocrite” and “When
The Oil Runs Out” , The Neurotics soon became firm favourites with
John Peel and recorded a number of classic sessions for his show. Playing
a few one-off shows since they disbanded 19 years ago this is the Neurotics
only show this year to celebrate the release for the first time on CD of
their landmark record “Kickstarting a Backfiring Nation” on Jungle
Records and a live DVD , “The Long Goodbye” on Cherry Red.
Come and bear witness to the true legacy of English punk rock at The
Spitz on
Saturday 6th May.
Main support comes from the mighty Blood Safari, formed
out of the ashes of The Parkinsons (Victor and Pedro) and Penthouse (Charlie
Fink) creating
a punk rock rockabilly roar that welds the sound of The Gun Club and The
Cramps to The Pistols and The Clash. Chinese Lungs open the night with
their full throttle punk assault.
