Why did you decide solo was for you and what made you take the acoustic route?
How many instruments do you play?
I decided to go solo when me and my mates were round someones house and
I
was messing about on this acoustic guitar there. I was asked there and
then
if I wanted to do a solo set at the(1998) Derby punx picnic, being completely
pissed out of my head I said yes.
I decided to stay solo 'cause I can write and play whatever I want without
discussing it with other people. (I only find out at gigs if people like my
stuff or not).
I can play guitar, bass, drums and harmonica (also kazoo, but anyone can do
that)
So how autobiographic are the songs? Is your life full
of porn, ugly women and drinking? Is there any subject you would not touch?
Most of the songs are autobigraphical, I find it easier
to write about
things I've done and seen with my own eyes, instead of pretending I'm some
interlectual rabbiting on about some political situation I don't fully
understand. Although I do have a few serious songs (e. g. new
labour, eco-warrior)
I personally think you sound like a mix of 3CR crossed with
Pork Dukes doing acoustic. What other comparisons have you had? And what
bands inspire you?
Thanks for the comparison, I've not heard much by Pork Dukes, but 3cr are
one of my fave bands around at the moment. Other people have compared
me
to
George Formby, Lonnie Donnegan, Billy Bragg, Captain Sensible, Auntie Pus
and
the Macc Lads. Although its nice to be compared to decent bands, I'd rather
sound like Paul Carter.
Even though I want to sound as original as poss, bands that have inspired
me include The Beatles The Who, Slade, Sweet, The Damned, The
Adverts, U. K. Subs, Anti-Nowhere League.
What is the best gig you have done and who else was on the
line-up?
Alot of my gigs have been good(believe it or not), but
I'll always remember
the first solo one I did, 'cause I was shitting myself before I went on, but
after the first song everyone went mad and from there on the crowd were
putty in my hands. Other bands playing that day were Concrete Sox, P. M. T. and
P. O. A. I'm sure there were others but can't remember(I'm bound to have
offended someone by forgetting them)
If you could see any band play live, either of the past or
present who
would it be?
I'd like to see the Damned do a gig with Rat Scabies
drumming for them
again. No offence to Pinch, it would just bring back memories if they did a
one off.
Do you prefer watching, or playing gigs? Why?
I prefer doing gigs if they're going well, but would
rather watch if I want
to get plastered and relax. My guitar playing goes rapidly down hill after
more than 2 pints.
What is the best sentence you have ever heard, that someone has managed to
get into a song's lyrics?
I've sucked sweets, I've sucked rock and I've even sucked
an old mans
cock. (So What - ANWL). You can't beat lyrics of that quality.
Describe punk at the beginning of the 21st century.
Punk these days seems to be in a lot more healthier position
than it did
in the late 80s, early 90s. There are alot of good bands out there, and alot
more people going to see them.
Plans, gigs and releases planned for 2004.
I've got a few gigs in the pipeline, and enough songs to
record an album. It
just means getting up off my fat arse and doing something about it.
